Airport Recognition Technology Showcased

New systems uses dual identifiers to increase accuracy and speed up security processes

WASHINGTON, DC -- New recognition technologies to help airport security were recently displayed at the annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The Dual Biometric Recognition System is the product of Recognition Systems, Inc., and Interflex -- businesses that operate under the corporate umbrella of Ingersoll-Rand Company.

The new system combines hand geometry and face recognition technology to create a redundant, accurate system for identifying and verifying the identity of individuals according to unique physical traits. The new system is one of the emerging technologies being explored by Simplifying Passenger Travel Interest Group (SPTIG), an industry association spearheaded by IATA that is dedicated to simplifying and securing passenger travel by implementing biometrics and other new technologies in a seamless system, coordinated between all service providers.

This system is similar to those already deployed at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, which processes 50,000 passengers per month through immigration with RSI HandReader kiosks. The airport reduced processing times from an hour to less than 20 seconds, and has become very popular with the traveling public. Another dual hand-face biometric system is about to be deployed at the Israeli-Palestinian land border for improved border control and faster processing.
