China Moves Ahead on WAPI Encryption

"A home-grown encryption standard for wireless local area network equipment"

The People's Daily Online reported last week that 20 Chinese companies formed an alliance to promote WAPI (wireless authentication and privacy infrastructure), "a home-grown encryption standard for wireless local area network equipment." The article went on to say that the move has Chinese government backing, and should reduce reliance on foreign vendors and the existing U.S.-backed IEEE802.11i standard.
