E-Vote: Iowa Governor Signs Voter Machine Legislation

April 3, 2008 By

Tuesday, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver signed Senate File 2347 into law, providing $4.6 million to create a statewide system of optical scan voting machines. The governor was joined by Secretary of State Michael Mauro and county auditors from around the state for the signing ceremony at the state Capitol.

"Throughout my career, both as secretary of state and now as governor, I have worked hard to increase voting participation and strengthen voting integrity," said Culver. "Last year, I was proud to sign Iowa's new Same Day Voter Registration Law to expand access at the polls. However, greater access to the polls must coincide with complete confidence in Election Day practices and procedures, which is why I am proud to sign Senate File 2347 into law. This new law will give Iowans a verified paper record of the ballot they cast, and ensure Iowa voters have complete confidence in our voting process."

Senate File 2347 will place optical scan voting machines in Iowa's 1,784 precincts before the November elections. Iowa voters will now be required to fill out a paper ballot, ensuring a hand recount of any election, should it be necessary.

In addition, this legislation will guarantee that voters with disabilities have the same opportunity to use a protected voting system.

"I want to express my gratitude to Secretary Mauro, the legislators from both sides of the aisle, and the county auditors from across the state whose hard work made this legislation possible," said Culver. "Thanks to their efforts, we will ensure that Iowa continues to lead the nation when it comes to access and the integrity of our voting process."

The Future of the Desktop in Government
