Georgia Emergency Management Agency Adds Satellite Communications Solution

May 4, 2006 By

The Office of Homeland Security -- Georgia Emergency Management Agency (OHS-GEMA) will deploy the DataPath 3450 Portable Command Post to strengthen its mobile command and control capabilities in the event of a disaster. OHS-GEMA presented the satellite communications solution at the 2006 Governor's Emergency Management Conference in Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday.

When disaster strikes, damage to terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure can be severe and emergency resources within the community can be overwhelmed. DataPath's solutions allow emergency first responders to restore communications networks so they can connect, communicate and coordinate during a disaster. Overcoming a significant challenge to effective emergency management, the DataPath 3450 creates interoperability between communications equipment that typically has not been designed to allow various military and civilian responders to talk to each other.

After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast last year, federal and military officials requested that DataPath deploy satellite earth terminals to several sites in the region. DataPath delivered the terminals and they were quickly operational in support of U.S. Army National Guard units as well as national, state and local civilian officials responsible for coordinating disaster response.

DataPath and OHS-GEMA have worked with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to integrate advanced geographic location and collaboration tools into the DataPath 3450.

The Future of the Desktop in Government

Until recently, there was no alternative to the familiar desktop computer, and its expensive upgrades and maintenance requirements. For cash-strapped local governments, the desktop computer is quickly becoming an unsustainable option for future progress. Now, a technology known as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) offers an alternative. It can be significantly more affordable than buying individual computers for every employee, and it provides similar capability. This paper shows how VDI is the future of the desktop and is a game-changer for local governments.
