Houston Launches Public Safety Wireless Network

City seeks to increase network capacity for IP cameras, access control and SCADA control for point-to-point systems as well as provide disaster-proof, wireless communication for homeland security.

The City of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, is deploying Ceragon Networks Ltd.'s FibeAir IP-MAX to increase network capacity and provide disaster-proof, wireless communication for homeland security.

Houston is utilizing Ceragon's IP solution to create a high-capacity, secure wireless network ring around the city, providing private network backhaul for IP cameras, access control and SCADA control for point-to-point systems. Ceragon's FibeAir IP-MAX is providing the city with a licensed microwave radio solution with native IP performance and high bandwidth capacity required for bandwidth intensive applications. The FibeAir IP-MAX is being deployed with 400 Mbps Fast Ethernet at 11 GHz, utilizing dual polarity antennas in a ring topology.

"The City of Houston selected Ceragon's solution as it meets our needs for licensed wireless IP communications with upgradeable network capacity and native IP capabilities," said Alan Goodman, LAN specialist of security management for the City of Houston. "As part of our Homeland Security efforts, Ceragon's secure, interference-free, wireless microwave technology will help us ensure the operation of our city's critical infrastructure and services as well as leverage the network to support Access Control and CCTV for police, fire, traffic or other municipal departments."

"With the growing awareness for disaster-proof communication, municipalities and public safety organizations are turning to wireless communication solutions," said Ira Palti, president and CEO, Ceragon Networks Ltd. "This project is further validation of our ability to provide complete communication backbone solutions for the fast-growing market of municipal networks."

This deployment is being implemented through Hutton Communications, Ceragon's local distributor, and system integrator Johnston Technical Services.
