New York State DOT Provides Travel Maps, Web Cams

April 9, 2007 By

According to the New York State Enterprise, a publication of the State CIO's Office, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) now integrates Google Maps to help report travel conditions and transportation status to the public.

NYSDOT uses the Condition Acquisition and Reporting system Web product (CARS Web) to report highway and road-related events. CARS Web is available to the public online, and users can zoom in, look at a map, a satellite photo, or an overlay of both. Zoom in further and click on a Web cam to see actual traffic on sections of interest.

Google provides a more complete representation of local, state, and federal highways, said the New York State Enterprise. As a result of this enhancement, DOT has reduced the time to update travel information from 15-20 minutes to less than one minute and eliminated the need to maintain or update the base mapping layer on an ongoing basis.

We also spoke with several members of the IT industry who have thought long and hard about these issues. The paper offers some best practices for shared government-to-government services, but also points out challenges that government and industry still must overcome before this model gains widespread adoption.
