Stockholm Challenge IT Award Winners Announced for 2006

Winning projects chosen from among 1,155 entrants

The Stockholm Challenge for 2006 focused on ICT for development in underserved communities throughout the world. A total of 1,155 projects registered in six categories by the Jan. 7 deadline, from which 151 finalists were chosen.

This year's Challenge -- designed to find and showcase excellent examples of ICT implementation with clear benefits, wide impact and sustainable business models -- awarded 5,000 Euro to winning projects and a special WSIS prize of 10,000 Euro for the best African project.

Wayne E. Hanson served as a writer and editor with e.Republic from 1989 to 2013, having worked for several business units including Government Technology magazine, the Center for Digital Government, Governing, and Digital Communities. Hanson was a juror from 1999 to 2004 with the Stockholm Challenge and Global Junior Challenge competitions in information technology and education.
