Westminster, Md., Plans Groundbreaking Ceremony for Installation of Broadband Network

The city's new fiber optic broadband will provide faster connection speeds and greater bandwidth than the current DSL and cable connections.

After 10 years of debate and study, the city of Westminster will begin the installation of a fiber optic broadband network this week.

At 9 a.m. Thursday, a groundbreaking ceremony will take place in front of Tina's Deli in the Airport Business Park. The event is free and open to the public.

The pilot phase of the network's construction will encompass the business park and the Fairway Drive residential area off of Old New Windsor Road. Henkels & McCoy Inc., an engineering and construction company based in Pennsylvania, will be overseeing the project. The group is expected to lay 500 feet of cable a day, and in total will lay 60 miles.

"Fiber Optic Broadband will provide faster internet connection speeds and much greater bandwidth than the currently provided DSL or cable connections," Mayor Kevin Utz said in a prepared news release. "We are excited to bring this state-of-the-art service to our residents and businesses."
