CfA Cities Get Free Cloud for One Year

A collaboration between Red Hat and Code for America brings Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service to local government agencies at no cost.

On March 21, open source provider Red Hat and Code for America (CfA) announced a collaboration aimed at increasing civic engagement.

To help further CfA’s goal of fostering collaboration between city hall and city residents and promoting innovative problem solving through technology, this collaboration will bring Red Hat’s OpenShift Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) to CfA fellows and partner communities free of charge for one year, according to a press release

"As PaaS becomes an increasingly important component in the adoption of cloud across industries and geographies, it will become more crucial for government agencies to be ahead of the curve," said Ashesh Badani, global leader of Cloud and OpenShift for RedHat. "We are excited to be able to offer the great benefits of our OpenShift PaaS to city governments through our work with Code for America.”

The idea is that city IT staff and CfA fellows can use this PaaS tool behind the scenes to focus on writing code, rather than having to spend time provisioning and maintaining servers.

“Cities are changing, said  Mick Thompson, a CfA engineer in residence. "Across the country, we are seeing local governments begin to leverage the phenomenal advances in modern technology to be more responsive and connected to their residents. Through this partnership with Red Hat, the Code for America Fellows will be equipped to collaborate with our cities and counties and do even more, creating sustainable, innovative civic technology.”
