European Parliament in Washington to Discuss Cooperation on Transatlantic Security and Data Protection with U.S. Congress

Topics include issues linked to the transfer of personal data such as passenger name records in transatlantic flights.

The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee has sent a delegation of 9 Members (MEPs) to Washington to meet with their Congressional counterparts to discuss transatlantic cooperation on justice and security. Topics include issues linked to the transfer of personal data such as passenger name records (PNR) in transatlantic flights, and monitoring of international bank transfers (SWIFT case) in connection with investigations into the financing of terrorism. The delegation is chaired by the President of the EU-U.S. permanent delegation Jonathan Evans.

MEPs will also brief Members of the U.S. House Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight on the works undertaken by the European Parliament's temporary committee investigating CIA illegal activities in Europe.

The 9-Member delegation is made up of:

Three more MEPs will take part in the meetings: Pervenche Beres (PES, FR), Stavros Lambrinidis (PES, EL) and Piia-Nora Kauppi (EPP-ED, FN).
